What is it you dream about?
What is one thing you wish, with all your might, you dream of doing, achieving, or experiencing?
As I type this, I can wholeheartedly say this is my dream…writing, that is.
In the process of creation, resistance rears its ugly head.
Resistance – not knowing, fear, self-doubt, and what if’s…had stalled me on pursuing my writing dream.
When I started this blog in April of 2015, I had a strong desire to share my experience and perspective on personal growth. That desire never went away. Rather, resistance started to take its place.
As of late, I had to re-evaluate what it is that was stopping me from sitting down and writing. It’s plain and simply, I believe, a mixture of my personality and resistance itself.
Being detail-oriented can, at times, well – get you stuck on the details. I have been stuck on the details of writing, the technicalities of the blog itself, and this idea that I have to know how to do X, Y, or Z before I can commit fully. Blend in some resistance (fear, unknowing, and self-doubt) and no wonder I appear to be a flaky, writer-wanna-be.
When you put your heart out to the world, in any craft or in any capacity, there is risk involved; rejection, backlash, or even maybe regret.
Commit to showing up.
I’ll be honest, there are days I feel like I am writing to no one. And once upon a time, I had a feeling of “what’s the use?” That was resistance stalling my progress and my dream.
Listen (yeah, even if it’s just one you reading this now) – don’t complicate things. Just do the work. Just show up.
Show up – this is my mentality towards writing today. Forget about SEO, the blog functionality, the proper comma placement (yes, I misuse comma’s all the freaking time – Grammarly tells me so), or all the other shit swirling around in my brain every time I attempt to sit down and write.
One thing I heard recently that has stuck with me is this: whatever it is you are dreaming of doing, you wholeheartedly and knowingly have to declare it and own it. BE IT, that thing, whatever it is, you want to be. It’s like a switch gets turned on in your brain – you will find yourself behaving as such. It’s a mindset switch we all have the capacity to turn on.
So, the next time someone asks me “what do you do?” I can, without skipping a beat, declare, “I am a writer.” Do I get paid for this gig? No. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Do I care? No.
Writing – IS. MY. DREAM. Helping people, from my fingertips to your reading heart (even if it’s just one), is my dream.
I only fulfill my end of the deal if I show up. I can only help people (even if just one) if I show up.
Everything else will fall into place – in the right space, time, and sequence. I have faith it will.
What is your dream?
Commit to showing up; this is my challenge to you.
